social anxiety

/ˈsoʊʃəl æŋˈzaɪɪdi/
IPA guide

People with social anxiety feel extremely anxious or fearful about interacting with other people. They may worry about being judged or embarrassed if they misread cues or don't say and do the expected things.

Social anxiety is more than just being a little shy: It's considered a mental health disorder. Some people with severe social anxiety never reach out or respond to others. The condition can be so overwhelming that it interferes with school, work, and other aspects of daily life. Having social anxiety is different from being an introvert or a "loner." Some people just like to be alone. People with social anxiety, however, have an extreme, irrational fear of being in social situations. Therapy can be helpful for people suffering from social anxiety.
